Today not only CykelVasan 90 was fully booked. The new UltraVasan 90 – Vasaloppet’s biggest news before the 2014 Summer Week– also very quickly reached its entry ceiling. This means that 750 participants are registered to run the whole distance from Sälen to Mora with start at 05.00 Saturday 23 August 2014.

The interest was overwhelming, above all from Sweden. The greater part of the 750 entrants are Swedes, which meant that the competition management have decided to add a further 100 start places for international participants, since the goal is that UltraVasan shall be an international big race.

Even UltraVasan has a shorter distance, UltraVasan 45, starting at the same time in Oxberg. In UltraVasan 45 there is no participant ceiling, and entry registrations can already be done now at vasaloppet.se.

“It’s extraordinarily impressive to see what attraction power Vasaloppet has and we’re both happy and relieved at such a great reception for a completely new race. Since last week we have ASICS with us as host for UltraVasan and together we shall work hard to create the biggest ultra-trail race in Scandinavia and offer a unique experience in the classic Vasaloppet terrain”, says Anders Selling, Vasaloppet’s CEO.

“Ultra” is the name for races which are longer than the marathon distance (42,195 metres) and “trail” or “terrain” means that the greater part of the race is away from asphalt. UltraVasan will comprise two races of, respectively, 90 and 45 km. Both races have gents and ladies classes. To ensure the possibility for international runners to take place in our races there is an international quota with reserved start places.

Involved in the planning of UltraVasan is the Swedish world star in ultra-running, Jonas Buud. The objective with UltraVasan is to seize on the great and growing running trend and create the biggest ultra-trail race in Scandinavia. The ambition also is that UltraVasan will strengthen the whole of Vasaloppet’s international standing as a sports event and the Dalarna region as a tourist destination.

    FACTS/What is Ultramarathon?
Ultramarathon distances have two categories: distance race and time race. The distances must always be longer than the standard marathon. The most prestige-filled distance is 100 kilometres where the World Championship is arranged annually under the direction of the IAU (International Association of Ultra Runners). Ultra-running is a division of the Swedish Athletic Association.

The world’s oldest and biggest ultramarathon is the Comrades Marathon (89 km) in South Africa which, in 2013, had 19,700 starters. The race has been arranged every year since 1921 and the best Swedish placing in the history of the race was Jonas Buud’s second place in this year’s race. There is also a world cup for marathon and ultra races in difficult mountain terrain called the “Skyrunning Series”.

The biggest ultramarathon races in Europe are in the Alps. The Swiss Alpine Marathon (78km) is in Davos in Switzerland at the end of July and the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (166km) at the end of August in Chamonix in France. Both these races have more than 2,000 participants.

In Sweden there have been ultramarathon competitions ever since Lejonbragden in Lund, run for the first time in 1984. Now there are several big competitions in Sweden together with the growing interest for ultra running.

Stockholm Ultra Marathon (50/100 km), which had its première in August 2013, had almost 800 entrants which is the biggest Swedish competition so far. Well-known Swedish ultra runners are foremost Rune Larsson, who dominated the sport during the 80’s and 90’s. During the later part of the 2000’s, Jonas Buud has been clearly the most outstanding men’s runner with many major international successes (three World Championship silvers in the 100 km and second placings in the Comrades Marathon and Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc, and seven times victor in the Swiss Alpine Marathon). On the ladies side, Kajsa Berg is Sweden’s best ultra runner. Kajsa is double reigning European champion in 100 km and also holds the Swedish record. The foremost Ultratrail runner on the ladies side is Emelie Forsberg who has met with great international success in, amongst others, the”Skyrunning series”.
