08/01/2014 Cold weather on the way!

Here is some current information about snow conditions in Vasalopps Arena and Vasaloppets planned snow strategy. Particularly gratifying is that the weather forecasts indicate that cold weather is now on its way.

With 52 days left until Vasaloppet itself there is a lack of snow in the greater part of Dalarna, even on the Vasaloppet course. However, in the cold period before Christmas, Vasaloppet managed to produce about 30,000 cubic metres of artificial snow in the Oxberg snow factory. Some of this has melted, but about 20,000 cubic metres is still left in Oxberg.

“We await now the coming weather change so that we can produce more artificial snow,” says Johan Eriksson, Vasaloppet’s acting sports manager. “As soon as we get below freezing we will run at absolute maximum capacity. On Monday January 13, according to our plan, we will begin laying out snow between Eldris and Hökberg. We will also have a meeting with Mora municipality regarding the section between Eldris and Mora, since the municipality is responsible for the course there. We will have our own special forecast during the next week and on Monday January 17 will take a new decision based on the conditions existing at that time.”

The cold is needed not only for artificial snow manufacture, but is important so that the land and marshes freeze. This is especially true for the area above Evertsberg.
“Just now we’re not too worried; we are working according to plan and have an idea as to how we can handle all this. If we get some freezing temperatures it is quite possible to work from that plan. It is, of course, very unfortunate for all the skiers who want to get out to prepare and train, but we hope that there will be some cold weather and snow in the rest of Sweden also,” concludes Johan Eriksson.

Footnote: In total, for the entire Vasaloppet course, it is estimated that 130,000 cubic metres artificial snow is needed. For the shorter races, TjejVasan and KortVasan, which start in Oxberg, 50,000 cubic meters is needed.
