13/01/2014 The race distancce now 42km instead of 60km!
It’s now official - the 40th Dolomitenlauf – part of the Worldloppet and FIS Marathon cup - will be held in Obertilliach on the 19th January. Over 2500 participants from 30 nations are set to head to the Dolomite festival to enjoy the superb winter and slope conditions.

Owing to the fresh snowfall it was reasoned that the Dolomitenlauf should be held on the Lienz valley floor area on Sunday, 19th January - after the Dolomiten sprint event and the Dolomiten Classic races on the Friday and Saturday. "Deep winter conditions are present in Obertilliach in Tirol’s Gailtal, at the foot of the rugged and romantic Lienz Dolomites, and there is almost one and a half metres of snow. A lot of snow has also fallen in the Lienz valley floor area and in the ski areas at Zettersfeld and Hochstein there is over a metre of fresh snow. However, the route passages at the valley floor completely iced-over because of the rain. This means that it is not possible for the skating event for the Dolomitenlauf to be held, since the start and finish areas in Lienz. For us Obertilliach, with its winter landscape and perfect cross-country skiing infrastructure at the cross-country skiing and biathlon centre was not just an alternative venue, it is also a fantastic venue. The route in Obertilliach is also more challenging than the one in Lienz. An unforgettable cross-country experience awaits participants from all over the world", says organiser Franz Theurl.

Late registrations for the Dolomiten Classic race (18th January), which also counts towards the Worldloppet series, to be run as the classic style event over 42 and 20 kilometres, and also for the Dolomitenlauf on the Sunday (42/20 kilometres) are still available for the respective start times, right up to 10:00 a.m. on the day! Late registrations may also be made in the town hall in Lienz on Friday between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

The Worldloppet association was founded in 1978 in Uppsala, Sweden and in January 1979 this biggest open cross-country event in the world started with the Dolomitenlauf in Lienz. The Worldloppet, at which 16 nations are represented, attracts more than 150,000 cross-country skiers every year. The Dolomitenlauf was held for the first time forty-five years ago. Yet because it had to be cancelled five times due to lack of snow, it is this year that it celebrates its 40th birthday. "That’s why we came up with the idea of have a supporting programme featuring music for the opening party on 17th January, from 6:30 p.m. on the main square in Lienz, as well as top-class sport with the Dolomitensprint. We will be revealing the highlights soon", Says Mr. Theurl.

Lots of top stars on the start line

We have already names lots of top stars from the international cross-country scene for the 40th Dolomitenlauf – headed by Italian Olympic champion Cristian Zorzi, in whose wake follow the previous year’s winner, Sergio Bonaldi and three-time victor Fabio Santus. Top Slovakian racer Martin Bajcicak, who was second last year, will also be on the start line. Incidentally, last year at the Dolomitenlauf the 20 kilometre short distance event was won by none other than Johannes Dürr from Lower Austria, fresh from his victory in the World cup event.
