As part of one of the classics in the European cycle marathon scene, this year a very special event is celebrating its première: the "SuperGiroDolomiti" which connects East Tyrol, Carinthia and Italy.
What the cross-country classic Dolomitenlauf is to winter, the Dolomitenradrundfahrt is to summer. Both events have one thing in common: They are organised by Tourist Office President Franz Theurl – one of the cofounders of the Worldloppet – and his tireless team from LRC Lienz.
With an extreme variant of the traditional Dolomitenradrundfahrt, Franz Theurl is calling attention to the Lienz Dolomites this year. With the "Supergirodolomiti" – covering 5,000 meters difference in altitude and 232 kilometres through wonderful natural landscape of three Euroregions – not just a great athletic challenge is created, but also a counterpart to the demanding Ötztalmarathon. The two-time champion of the classic in Ötztal, Stefan Kirchmair, who last year won the Dolomitenradrundfahrt, has already asked about the route and made excited comments. "My personal highlights of the events are surely the fantastic alpine world, the perfect organisation and the varied routeing. For marathon fans, this will be a very special challenge", says the 25-year-old Tyrolean.
Field limited to 1,000 starters.
Apart from Stefan Kirchmair, the "SuperGiroDolomiti" is also an option for numerous ex-professional cyclists. As a prominent sportsman, the South Tyrolean Olympic medal winner Christof Innerhofer, who in recent years numbered among the regular starters at the Dolomitenradrundfahrt, has also registered. For the first edition of the "SuperGiroDolomiti", the number of participants has been limited to 1,000. Thus registration at www.dolomitensport.at should not be postponed for too long.
"SuperGiroDolomiti" as a joint project.
Organiser Franz Theurl sees the first edition of the "SuperGiroDolomiti" not just as an athletic challenge for the best hobby cyclists, but mainly as a joint project of the regions of Tyrol, Carinthia and Friaul - at which the crossing of national borders constitutes a special aspect. In Lienz they have been banking on cooperation in cycling with Italy for years, reflected in several stage finishes of the "Giro d`Italia" or "Giro del Trentino". "Already in the preliminary stages we succeeded in establishing good understanding with those in charge in Friaul, thus creating a foundation for good organisational conditions, We provide for optimal traffic control and road blocks on the entire route, not just in East Tyrol and carinthia, but also on Italian soil", says Theurl.
On the 232 km long route, participants can expect not just the challenging climb to the Nassfeld ski-resort, but also up to the Lanzen mountain pass, across which the "Giro d`Italia" was recently run. The extreme variant of the Dolomitenradrundfahrt also lays on further climbs in Friaul. Thus after the Lanzen pass, the Plöcken pass once back on Austrian soil must be conquered. After the descent from the Plöcken pass, participants in the "SuperGiroDolomiti" need to complete the 112 kilometre long route leading across the idyllic Lesachtal valley and back to the finish in Lienz. The starting time of the "SuperGiroDolomiti" has been scheduled for 6:30 and the classic Dolomitenradrundfahrt will be opened at 10:00. "The 3.5 hours advantage should result in the leading group joining the pack of the 27th Dolomitenradrundfahrt in Kötschach. This should also ensure that the 27th Dolomitenradrundfahrt can officially end at 18:00 in the old quarter of Lienz", describes Franz Theurl.
While the participants of the traditional Dolomitenrunde race over 112 km (1,870 m difference in altitude) will get cycling gloves by Zanier as a starting gift, the extreme cyclists will receive a special "SuperGiroDolomiti-Finisher-jersey" by Löffler. All participants also get a certificate with all their personal facts and data. But that's not the only thing that makes participating worthwhile. The incomparable routing through wonderful natural landscape should make any cyclist's heart leap for joy.
