The first snowfall of the season has hit the mountains around Sjusjoen. As a result the skiers start to check both weather forecasts hoping for more snow and their ski equipment. It is also time to register for the great ski marathons of this winter.
Entries reserved for non-norwegian participants are still available. The only thing you have to do to experience the largest and probably most challenging ski race of the circuit (54 K) is to click on http://tiur.birkebeiner.no/asp/?lang=en
After last winters cancellation due to heavy winds, the organizers have worked hard to secure the race and especially the most exposed parts of the course, over the mountains of Doelfjellet and Raufjellet. As the winds usually reach a top and then weaken quite fast in the region, all the measures to be able to postponed the start and still guarantee a fair race have been explored. An even closer cooperation with the meteorologists will also be part of the plan, with one of them supporting the jury.
Also the different ways to protect the course and the tracks from the winds have been considered.
The challenge is significant, but the organizers still keep in mind that the essence and originality of Birken have to been kept. Skiing over the mountains with a rucksack is a quite unique experience, highly valued by all skiers of the world. Though the safety of all 17 000 participants as well as the fairness of the competition will be given highest priority.
Don’t miss your chance to experience the unique Birken Ski Race.
