For more than 40 years amateur and pro runners of the cross-country skiing scene have been coming together for the König Ludwig Lauf in Oberammergau/Bavaria every year on the first weekend of February. With far more than 4000 participants this race is Germany’s biggest and oldest cross-country skiing race.
All participants share a common passion: cross-country skiing in paradisiacal Graswang Valley in the Ammergau Alps. Starting in Oberammergau, passing by the Abbey of Ettal, the race weaves through one of the most beautiful mountain valleys of the Alps. Also the Bavarian fairy tale king Ludwig II. was fascinated by the beauty and tranquillity of this unspoilt nature and built his favourite castle here: the Linderhof Palace.
The König Ludwig Lauf offers various races: There is a 50 km run in classic style as well as a 50 km run for skaters. Furthermore, there are competitions with 23 km in both disciplines (classic and skating). And also for the young runners there is a special race: they can participate in the “Mini-Kini”.The Mini-Kini has no starting fee. It's free for every child. Moreover, the cross-country skiing world championship of physicians and pharmacists (WMCC) is part of the King Ludwig Race and takes place at this occasion.
