One of the most prestigious long distance races of the world celebrates its 40th anniversary this weekend: The Marcialonga 70km CT. Several side events, like the 11km long “Marcialonga Story Race” on Saturday, finishing in the main square of Predazzo and figuring only skiers in traditional clothes and equipment, will be held throughout the race week (for more detailed information please visit www.marcialonga.it).
Almost entirely prepared of artificial snow, the Marcialonga track, which joins the two valleys of Fassa and Fiemme, will once again be of perfect condition for the over 7000 participants. Early in the morning, the race starts in Val di Fassa"s Moena from where it heads deeper into the valley until Canazei (~ km 18) where it turns back towards Moena. After having passed Moena, the track continues to Val di Fiemme, passing the sites of the 2013 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships (held at the end of February), like Predazzo (ski jumping) and Lago di Tesero (cross country skiing). Whereas the track descends steadily from Canazei on, the last three kilometres show a complete different picture! They will be the most challenging ones as the track climbs steeply from the valley up to the main square of Cavalese where the well known finish is situated. These last three kilometres can be very decisive. Those who have decided that gliding is most important for them, and who therefore didn"t use some kick wax, will have to double pole up the enormous hill – not an easy task after almost 70km!
The winner is awaited in the finish by the “Soreghina”, the so called “Princess of the Dolomites”, and will be awarded a huge collar!
