“ASICS is an international actor with wide experience of working with all types of running at the very highest level. We see our long-sighted collaboration as playing a key role in our investment in running and especially with the new UltraVasan, where our ambition is to create the biggest ultra-trail race in Scandinavia and offer a unique experience over the classic Vasaloppet terrain”, says Anders Selling, Vasaloppet’s CEO.
“Ultra” is the name for races which are longer than the marathon distance (42,195 metres) and “trail” or “terrain” means that the greater part of the race is away from asphalt. Vasaloppet presents two races of, respectively, 90 and 45 km. The 90 km starts, exactly as the traditional Vasaloppet, from Sälen and follows the course eastwards to Mora but the race over 45 km starts in Oxberg. Both races have gents and ladies classes. The newly created sponsorship means that ASICS will be host for the whole of Vasaloppet’s concentration on ultra-running.
“It feels completely natural for us to be involved from the very beginning of the new UltraVasan, and in this way to secure our future position in trail running in Scandinavia as well. Our experience from other parts of the world comes together with Vasaloppet’s unique position as an organiser and will give incredibly good conditions for a really great race. With a broad contact net and our own team of runners we can also ensure that many more will have their eyes opened for Vasaloppet’s arrangements,” says Erik Nystedt, ASICS Sweden.
Japanese ASICS is already a sponsor for some of the world’s biggest marathon races including, amongst others, the New York Marathon, the Paris Marathon, ASICS Stockholm Marathon, and the Tokyo Marathon. ASICS also sponsor the Swedish world star, Jonas Buud, who has worked in close collaboration with Vasaloppet to develop the new UltraVasan. Jonas, born, growing up and living in Mora, has won the legendary Swiss Alpine Marathon race for seven consecutive years (2007–2013) and has a second place in the world’s most prestigious ultra-trail race, Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) in Chamonix. He also holds the Swedish record over 100 kilometres with a time of 6.28.59.
In the première of UltraVasan 90 the entry ceiling is set to 750 runners; for UltraVasan 45 there will be no maximum numbers. Entry registration opens on Sunday 22 September at 09.00 on vasaloppet.se. More information and films from the course are at vasaloppet.se/ultra.
Facts about the course
UltraVasan 90 is a race which will make high demands on participants’ all-round versatility. The runner will be offered a course with, so to speak, “two faces”, everything from technical sections on narrow paths to fast running on prepared paths and gravel tracks. These will be presented, mostly, towards the latter part of the race (the final 30 km). The course begins with the challenge of a heavy climb (the first 4 km.) Other parts of the course can be described as relatively flat with the exception of the famous uphill before Risberg and, not least, the renowned “Lundbäcksbackarna” before Oxberg, which will confront participants with a splendid challenge!
