08/09/2014 Maricalonage running for over 1.600!

Limo claims victory in Italy’s 25.5k Marcialonga Running event

Boudalia and Mokraji complete the African podium

Eliana Patelli wins for the third time amongst women

Over 1,600 participants at the start in the Dolomites

Kiprop Limo from Kenya won the 2014 Marcialonga Running race in Trentino region (Italy) and set a new course record with a time of 77 minutes 58 seconds on Sunday morning. Limo beat Iahcen Mokraji’s previous 2013 record of 79 mins 4 seconds, and kept back Moroccan Said Boudalia and Mokraji. On the women’s side, Italian Eliana Patelli was the top finisher with a time of 95 minutes 27 seconds and signed Marcialonga’s history book for the third time, after 2011 and 2012 victories.

Over 1,600 runners from the country and from 24 other nations turned up in Moena town centre yesterday morning (1,625 to be precise) while some warm unexpected sun shone over majestic Dolomites. Limo, 21, won the Stramilano Half Marathon last year and certainly represented one of the so-called ‘Men-to-beat’ along with Boudalia and Mokraji of Morocco plus Africans Kipngetich and Nshimirimana. The young runner from Kenya started very fast and in a few kilometres earned a good gap from the rest of the pack. Limo constantly increased his pace running for first through the towns of Predazzo and Ziano, followed by Boudalia and Mokraji, while Kipngetich and Nshimirimana were a little struggling behind. The last few kilometres of the 25.5k course is a rather steep uphill to the finish line in Cavalese town centre, but Limo did not hesitate at all and eventually crossed the line almost 4 minutes ahead of Boudalia. Mokraji came in third followed by Italian Giovanni Gualdi. Italy’s Eliana Patelli managed to keep at bay last year’s winner Iozzia – over 1 minute back – and Laura Giordano.

Sunday’s Marcialonga Running was the eventual step of combined event Combinata Punto3 Craft - together with the Marcialonga Cycling Craft road race and last January’s ski-marathon - and Ivan Debertolis and Arianna Mazzel seized the 2014 title.
