The Dolomitenlauf kicked off the Wordloppet on 18 January 1979 and on 19 January 2014, the Dolomites town of Lienz will celebrate the 35th anniversary of this exciting global association. This unforgettable cross-country event at the foot of the romantic Dolomites peaks attracts over 2000 participants from all over the world. 45 years later, it has become a true ‘Dolomitenlauf Games’. Lots of tradition and special flair set the pulses of cross-country enthusiasts racing! Visitors get to sample the hospitality and enthusiasm of the locals on the Thursday beforehand at the Romantiklauf race – a welcome race for cross-country guests from near and far. The celebratory opening and lighting of the Dolomitenlauf torch takes place on the Friday, giving the event an Olympic feel. Afterwards, Dolomitensprint takes place – a truly unrivalled cross-country spectacle!
This year, the Dolomiten-Classicrace looks set to be a real highlight for classic cross-country fans and will take place on Saturday 18 January 2014 in Obertilliach over a distance of 42/20 km. A few kilometres on the flat have been added to the new route, meaning that selected ascents have also been shortened. The captivating mountain village in the Lienz Dolomites offers a dreamy winter landscape and unique mountain backdrop for the event. On Sunday 19 January, the starting shots will be fired in Lienz for the 40th Dolomitenlauf freestyle event over 60/25 km. The motto for most participants is ‘Everyone a winner over themselves’ but some want to seize victory as part of the FIS Marathon Cup. Super star Petter Northug recently paid the Dolomitenlauf a big compliment – he enjoyed the 39th Dolomitenlauf and wants to head to the starting line again this year! One thing is for sure – the 40th Dolomitenlauf will be all about enjoyment of cross-country and bringing people together. We would like to invite you to take on the challenge of the Dolomitenlauf 2014! For more information, see www.dolomitensport.at
