XIII traditional international Rostec Demino FIS/Worldloppet Ski Marathon 2020. Day 2.

31/01/2014 Not much snow in Estonia at the moment, but cold temperatures at least!

Just two weeks before the 43rd Tartu Maraton, there is a serious lack of snow on the traditional Otepää-Elva course. Because of that, organizers have started to work on a back-up plan, which involves the course being moved to a frozen lake.

“Initial plans are to make a 50km course, which would run along the edge of lake Võrtsjärv, mainly on the Southern part of the lake and would cross it in the middle. Marathon would still be in classic technique,” said director of the race Indrek Kelk. “Ski marathon has to be at least 50km long to be qualified as an official Worldloppet race.”

Today head course master Assar Kütt tested the track together with race director Indrek Kelk. “12-tonne tractor stayed on the ice and testing was successful. This gives us hope that the lake scenario is still possible as a backup plan,” said Kelk.

Official decision concerning the 43rd Tartu Maraton and the race venue will be made on the 10th of February. 43rd Tartu Maraton should take place on the 16th of February.
