The unusual weather conditions of this winter have placed big challenges for skiing event organizers around Europe including also the Finlandia Ski Marathron. The traditional skiing competition will however be organized with a slightly modified route.
The organizing committee is still with positive spirits thanks to the current weather forecast and trusts that it will snow the required 15 cm that would enable skiing with a shortened route but in familiar surroundings. According to the original plan the total length of the route would be from 32 km to 40 km. The present weather forecast promises a lot of snow for the coming weekend and next week the temperature should remain under zero degrees.
The organizing committee has however decided to start building a backup route on the ice of lake Vesijärvi. The preparations for the route will be started this week alongside with continuous measurements of ice thickness. In case the Finlandia Ski Marathon will be moved to the backup route, the total length of the tracks would be 38 km and 20 km.
Cancelling the event is currently not even an option. The final route selection will be published next Monday, February 17th.
