It seems like every marathon skier who is not at the Engadin Skimarathon at the moment, skied in Russia today. Perfect weather conditions, just 2 degrees above zero and a bit sun, and well-prepared 50 km course brought skiers from 19 countries to the Demino Ski Marathon race.
This year Demino has a record number of famous skiers on the course: Olympic and World Champions, active members of National ski team, leaders of the Demino Ski Marathon 2015. The struggle began right after the start, and supporters at the stadium and spectators of live video broadcast on the Demino Marathons web-site were waiting for the results in great anticipation.
The first was Evgeny Dementiev, Olympic Champion in Turin, with the result 01:45:02,53 followed by a member of the Russian National cross-country ski team Raul Shakirzyanov who got silver with the result 01:46:07,16. World Champion Alexey Petukhov closed the top three athletes among men only two seconds later. The 4th and 5th place were decided by a split second - Nikolay Morilov, just a step behind Petukhov, became the 4th and Alexander Utkin – the 5th.
"Athletes pay attention to organization, location of the course, distribution of bibs and to other small things. Demino organizes the event on a very high level, so we don’t have any problems. We come here not only for the results but for emotions that we lack during the season. Demino has a very positive, truly Russian ambience, I always really enjoy coming here!" Alexei Petukhov
Olga Rocheva from the Russian Marathon Team became the absolute winner among ladies with the result 01:54:40,81. Anastasia Vlasova finished second 2:20 minutes later. Natalya Zernova who was the silver medallist last year got bronze. Natascia Leonardi Cortesi from Switzerland closed the top 6 podium among ladies.
Olga Rocheva: "It was a really fast race! Perfect snow conditions allowed me to show a very good result. And I loved support of people on the course".
"My first marathon in Demino was in 2011. I fell in love with this place and now I bring a group of skiers with me every year to ski this wonderful marathon. People are very friendly… Oh, and I like the bottles on the refreshment stations, I have never seen bottles like these at European marathons!" Natascia Leonardi Cortesi
Tomorrow is the second race day in Demino – 25 km CT Worldloppet half-marathon, 5 km CT and 10 km CT races and the Demino Baby-marathon for children under 7 years old led by Alexey Petukhov and Nikolay Morilov, bronze Olympic medalists in team sprint, with their sons.
