XIV traditional international Rostec Demino FIS/Worldloppet Ski Marathon 2021. Day 1.

XIV traditional international Rostec Demino FIS/Worldloppet Ski Marathon 2021. Day 2.

Once again, it was the weather which did not leave the organisers any other choice than to take out plan B in order to be able to hold their race this weekend. A few days ago, the area around the famous monastery Ettal and the village of the world wide known “Passion Play”, Oberammergau, still looked like a winter wonderland. But due to very warm temperatures announced for this week in the area of Oberammergau, the OC of the most important long distance race in Germany, the König-Ludwig-Lauf, was forced to take the difficult decision to change the track of the 50km long race to a 21km loop which has to be skied twice. With the new track, the racers won"t have the possibility to pass the famous castle of Ludwig II, “Schloss Linderhof”. However, in order to be on the safe side, the organisers had to take this hard decision. “It was not an easy decision to change the track in that way, but we do not want to compromise the whole race by staying with the original track. Now, we are on the safe side – the track is in a good condition and there aren"t any more problematic areas on this loop. We will definitely be able to hold the race this weekend. This was our priority when we took the decision.” informs Marc Schauberger of the organisation committee.
The race will start, as usual, in Ettal, then following the original track to Dicklschwaig (km 8,5km) and further until km 11,5. Here, the track now turns back to Graswang instead of continuing further to Schloss Linderhof. At km 18,5km, the race turns into its second round. When the racers have finished the second loop, they turn towards Oberammergau instead of heading into a third loop via Ettal.
About 4400 racers will start in the different races this weekend at the 41st edition of the König-Ludwig-Lauf. On Saturday, the FIS Marathon Cup (now 42km instead of the original 50km) will be held in skating technique. Racers who do not want to ski such a long distance, can also participate in the short race which counts 21km (one loop). On Sunday, it"s time for the classic technique. Two races are proposed – one 42km long one and one of 21km.

As this 5th FIS Marathon Cup is held in the skating technique, the classic specialists will take a break after the Marcialonga last weekend. Therefore, the skating specialists are eager to regain the podium and to show off their capacities. Surely, the strong Italian team with names like Sergio Bonaldi, who could already win the Dolomitenlauf this season, Florian Kostner, Cristian Zorzi and Fabio Santus will be hard to beat. Benoît Chauvet (FRA), the fourth of the season opener La Sgambeda in December, will take part as will Martin Koukal, Petr Novak (both CZE), Aliaksei Ivanou (BLR), the winner of La Transjurassienne last year, Thomas Freimuth (GER) and the Eberharter brothers Christian and Michael. Pietro Piller Cottrer (ITA), who was originally on the start list as well, won"t be able to start as he injured his right knee during a fall in a downhill part of the Marcialonga last Sunday. Nevertheless, it will be a very interesting race, especially as the leader bib of the overall FIS Marathon Cup can be taken from the leading Norwegians by several skiers, with Bonaldi as the strongest contestant.
On the women"s side, Valentina Shevchenko (UKR) will be back on scene as will Riitta-Liisa Roponen (FIN), the winner of La Sgambeda in December. Antonella Confortola (ITA), will be another strong bet for the podium. Jessica Müller (GER) from the new Skimarathon Team will try to hold high the German colours as will Kari Eie, normally a biathlete, for Norway.
The actual start list for the elite skiers can be found here (always subject to change).
