The 19th Rostec Demino Ski Marathon included satellite races for the sporting event's youngest participants. These included a 1-kilometer baby marathon for toddlers and a 2-kilometer race for older children.
The young marathon participants came to Rybinsk from across the country: the Yaroslavl, Moscow, Voronezh, Vologda, Tver, Arkhangelsk, Bryansk, Murmansk, Ivanovo, and other regions, as well as Moscow and St. Petersburg. Among the participants were the children of Olympic champions Natalia Korosteleva and Nikolai Morilov, regular participants in the main races Nikita Khabarov and Evgeny Kochegarov, and Andrei Alipkin, winner of the 16th Rostec Demino Marathon gold race.
To ensure the safety and comfort of all participants in the children's races, they were divided into two races. "Baby" races are divided by age, with participants in the two-kilometer race divided into boys and girls.
The famous Demino Baby Marathon opens the door to the world of sport for the youngest skiers aged 4 to 8.
"There is no timekeeping in these races. All participants start under number 1, are winners, and receive well-deserved finisher's medals. This is how we raise the next generation of today's marathon runners. And now, more and more participants in the main races are coming to Demino with their families, and our marathon is becoming a true family sporting event," said Igor Samoilov, director of the Demino Marathons non-profit partnership.
This two-kilometer race is for skiers aged 9 to 11. In this race, everyone has a bib number and works towards a result, keeping track of the time. The race is included in the "Family Championship." This is a new awards format in which parents and children can achieve the best combined time across various distances and receive special diplomas and cups. The family competition includes the 30-kilometer classic or freestyle distances, the gold marathon race, and children's 2- or 5-kilometer races. Nikolai Morilov's family was one of the first to register for the new competition: his wife started the 30-kilometer freestyle on the first day of the marathon. The Olympic medalist himself ran the 50-kilometer main race, while his son competed in the 2-kilometer race.
