Fossavatnsgangan (Fossavatn Ski Marathon) in Iceland is looking forward to a memorable 2015 season. This year will not only mark the 80th anniversary of the event, it will also be the inaugural race for Fossavatn as a member of the Worldloppet family. According to Daníel Jakobsson, chairman of Fossavatnsgangan and an Olympic skier from Lillehammer 1994, the organizers are already feeling the Worldloppet-effect. „We have never experienced such interest in our race before. We already have around one hundred registrations, which would of course be a disaster if it was Vasaloppet, but for us it is a major achievement. We usually don‘t get many registrations until after Christmas, so this is something new for us. I‘m optimistic that we will see a new participation record this season.“
The Fossavatn festival stretches over four days, starting on Wednesday, April 29 with a Master Class, were people get the chance to meet and learn from elite skiers, including FIS Marathon Cup winner and Olympic medalist Ritta Liisa Roponen from Finland. On Thursday we will offer a 25 km skate race, but this is the very first time that Fossavatnsgangan offers a race in the free technique. Friday is a „Family day“ with short distances for children and beginners, while Saturday is the day of the main race, 50 km classic, along with 25 km classic and 10 km classic. The 50 km distance is valid for a Worldloppet Gold stamp, while the 25 km races (free and classic) are valid for Worldloppet Silver stamps. For full schedule, please see www.fossavatn.com.
Please note that registration prices will be raised on December 1, so the last chance to register at the lowest possible rate is November 30. You can register online at www.fossavatn.com but if you need any assistance regarding your registration, travel plans, accommodation etc. please don‘t hesitate to contact the race organizers at email@example.com.
